About OhmConnect Energy
OhmConnect was founded in 2014 in San Francisco, California, with an interesting approach to improving long-term, sustainable energy. Their goal was to create a community that could reduce the amount of energy consumed during high-demand times. To do this, they created a rewards program with a unique business proposition: pay customers to save energy. This program was a win-win for customers and the state’s energy grid.
In early 2022, OhmConnect Energy was launched to expand OhmConnect’s operations to the great state of Texas! While the power grid in Texas is generally reliable, we learned from Snowmageddon all grids can get overwhelmed and fail during spikes in demand. Recognizing this, OhmConnect saw an opportunity to expand and bring its OhmHour Rewards program to Texas. Texans can now participate in their energy-saving program and help reduce the strain on our grid during times of high demand.

What we like about OhmConnect Energy
We really like OhmConnect Energy’s proactive approach to easing the strain on the power grid during peak usage times. They’ve done a great job incentivizing customers to reduce usage during peak energy demand. Their “OhmHour” rewards program is integrated into all their plans and has positively impacted grid reliability and reduced customer energy costs.
We also like that OhmConnect Energy has brought together community and technology, making energy conservation rewarding and practically effortless when paired with smart devices like smart thermostats and plugs. Their intuitive mobile app allows customers to connect these smart devices to their OhmConnect Energy account, which can be set up to automatically reduce their usage during energy-saving times, maximizing the reward potential for customers.
Finally, it’s easy to receive these rewards. Their energy-saving events are really manageable. They last only about one hour per week, which most customers find really easy to participate in.
How OhmConnect Energy Reward Program Works
The OhmConnect Energy rewards program encourages people to reduce energy usage during times of excessive demand. During these times, “peaker” or “fast-acting” power plants are brought online to help meet demand. These plants are expensive and are not friendly to the environment. The goal is to prevent these fast-acting plants from being used at all.
OhmConnect Energy creates energy-saving events called “OhmHours.” These times are when customers can reduce their energy usage and earn rewards called “watts.” You can then cash in your “watts” for various rewards and savings.
- Here’s how it works:
- 1. Receive a notification for when the OhmHour will take place and how many “watts” you could earn.
- 2. Reduce your energy usage during the OhmHour to receive your watts.
- 3. Use the mobile app to view upcoming events, see watts earned, manage your smart devices, and claim rewards.
- Pro Tip: Use smart devices to receive bonus watts.
