Did you know there are 142 Retail Electricity Providers registered in the state of Texas? And of those, 53 are actively servicing customers in Texas? That’s a lot of electricity providers!

How do you know if you’re choosing the right one? Below, we provide insight into what a retail electricity provider is, their role in the energy market, what to look for when choosing a provider, and information to help you navigate the vast number of electricity providers in Texas.

What is an Electricity Provider?

More formally known as Retail Electricity Providers (REPs), electricity providers are the middlemen between you and the energy market.

They’re the company you think of when you hear ‘electric company’ because they’re the ones who send you your electric bill each month. In fact, that is their primary purpose: to facilitate the purchase and sale of electricity.

What Electricity Providers Do

Purchase wholesale electricity in bulk

Create Electricity Plans offered to retail customers

Sell electricity to retail customers

Facilitate all electricity billing

Customer Billing and Account Support

Submit requests for new service or service to be transferred

What Electricity Providers Don't Do

Deliver Electricity to your house

Handle Power Outages

Install new electricity meters

Meter readings to determine energy usage

Setup new or transferred service

These are handled by your local utility supplier (TDU)

Although buying and selling electricity is their primary purpose, there is a little more to electricity providers. For example, mitigating risks of fluctuating energy prices. Since providers are selling energy that’ll be used in the future at today’s prices, they must manage the risk of fluctuating energy prices throughout the year. Which is important to know when looking to sign up with a new provider, more on that later.

Best Way to Choose an Electricity Provider

When it comes to choosing a provider, it’s important to remember that no one provider offers ‘better’ electricity than another provider. Electricity may come from different sources (fossil fuels, wind, solar, etc), but there is no difference in the quality or the reliability of the electricity.

When it comes to choosing an Electricity Provider, these are the three steps we recommend:

1. Determine the Type of Plan that’s Best for You
First, you need to determine what type of plan is best for you. Is it a simple/straightforward plan, a plan that offers a bill credit, or a plan that offers a lower rate during times you use electricity you use the most? Knowing the type of plan best for you is the best place to start. Learn more about how to be a smart electricity shopper

2. Find Providers that Offer the Type of Plan You’re Looking For
Once you know the type of plan best for you, narrow your search to only the providers that offer that type of plan. We have filters on our plan pages for every type of plan available.

3. Choose the Best Provider, with the Best Rate for your Type of Plan
Once you know your plan type, and have narrowed your search to those providers that offer that plan, you can then see which provider has the best features, has the best rating, and offers the best price.

Choosing the Best Provider

With so many providers, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Even after determining the type of plan best for you and narrowing down the providers that offer that plan, there could still be 10, 15, 20, or more providers left to choose from! Researching each of those providers on your own could take a lot of time.

You could opt for the cheapest plan, but the price differences between a quality provider and a bad provider, like what we call a ghost provider, could be just fractions of a penny. Shopping solely on price, you risk being stuck with a lousy provider, and for what? To save $5 a month? It’s not worth it!

So what is the easiest way to narrow it down to know you’re getting a quality provider?

Providers with the same Parent Company

Before we get into our ratings for the providers, it’s helpful to know which providers are related to each other or have the same parent company.

As in many industries, smaller companies get purchased or acquired by larger competitors. This is no different in the Texas Electricity Market.

• Acquisition – A great new provider starts making a name for itself and builds a solid customer base, only to be gobbled up by industry giants.

• Merger – Alternatively, they may merge with other companies similar to them that offer a slightly different offering to expand their customer base.

• Sale – Other times the provider will sale their customers to another provider.

In the case of a sale, customers are moved to the new provider, but with Mergers and Acquisitions, often the original provider’s brand will remain intact. Only the plan offerings will change to align with those of the other provider. Which is why it’s important to know which providers are related, because their plans and services will be the same.

Here we have the individual providers servicing Texas, and then we grouped them by those that have the same parent company.
