How Does the TXU Ultimate Season Pass Compare to a Simple Plan?

Averaged out, TXU’s Ultimate Season Pass costs $141 more per month—$1,700 extra yearly—than a simple plan at 1000 kWh. It might be the priciest plan we’ve seen. Let’s break it down…

TXU's Ultimate Season Pass

$285/mo

@ 1000 kWh

Simple, Straightforward Plan

$144/mo

@ 1000 kWh

For these examples, we’re using plans for the utility supplier Oncor. The exact numbers may vary slightly across different suppliers due to their different costs for delivery, but the concept remains the same.

Additionally, we’re not endorsing any specific provider or plan. Our goal is simply to illustrate how this plan compares to a simple, straightforward electricity plan.

Let's Start with the Basics

Here’s the TXU Ultimate Season Pass at full price—no discounts—vs. a simple plan at 14.9¢/kWh (1000 kWh). Four months (April, May, Oct, Nov) get no breaks, so costs climb fast. Check the charts:

TXU's Plan Details

• Energy Charge:  18.6¢ per kWh

• Base Charge:  $9.95/mo

• 50% Discount:  Jan, Feb, July, Aug

• 25% Discount:  Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec

• Advertised Prices

• 500 kWh = 21.0¢

• 1000 kWh = 19.6¢

• 2000 kWh = 18.9¢

Note: The advertised prices are a little misleading. TXU is accounting for discounts in their advertised prices, which do not always apply.

We show how to find these later in the article

This plan is considered Simple, Straightforward, and No Gimmick.

Do TXU’s Discounts Offset the High Costs?

The numbers above look grim, but TXU’s Ultimate Season Pass offers discounts 8 months a year.

Here’s the breakdown:

25% Off Energy Charge: March, June, Sept, Dec

TXU Ultimate Season Pass Energy Charge Discounts for each month

It’s important to note the Discount only applies to the Provider’s Energy Charge. It does not apply to your total bill, which includes TDU Delivery Charges or other fees like the Base Charge. It only applies to the “Energy Charge.” This is a very important note. We’ll explain why.

Energy Charge Explained

For those who aren’t familiar with Energy Charges, the Energy Charge is the purchase price of electricity from the Provider. Think of it as the purchase price of the product.

If you buy a shirt online for $19.99, but by the time you checkout, it’s $32. The purchase price didn’t change; you just paid for taxes, delivery, etc… Electricity shopping is the same. The Energy Charge is the purchase price of the product/electricity. Taxes, fees, delivery, etc… are all extra.

Comparing the Energy Charges

TXU’s Energy Charge for their Ultimate Season Pass is 18.6¢ per kWh, whereas the Simple Plans Energy Charge is 9.45¢ per kWh—*almost half of TXU’s Energy Charge.

Simple Plan Details

Energy Charge: 9.45¢

*This is a very important note. Given the purchase price (energy charge) of electricity is almost 50% more with TXU’s Ultimate Season Pass, and their biggest discount is 50%, this should give you a pretty good idea of where this comparison is headed.

Typical Texas Household Electricity Usage

Check out the chart below for a typical Texas household’s monthly electricity usage over one year. Usage varies seasonally, but monthly patterns stay steady year over year.

The sample above is for a house with a gas heater, as seen with low electricity usage in the winter months. If you have an electric heater, your usage will be higher in winter than what’s in the chart. But this is irrelevant when it comes to exposing the high cost of TXU’s Ultimate Season Pass Plan.

Cost of TXU's Ultimate Season Pass vs. Simple Plan

Using typical usage, we calculated monthly bills with TXU’s discounts applied. Spoiler: It’s ugly—$85-$350 extra most months vs. a simple plan. Check the charts:

Overpaying 8 Months a Year
TXU Ultimate Season Pass Cost versus Simple Plan
Only Jan, Feb, July, Aug Break Even
The 50% discount months (Jan, Feb, July, Aug) match the simple plan’s cost—barely. The other 8 months? You’re overpaying $85-$350, doubling costs in spring and fall. That’s not savings—it’s a rip-off!

Our Review: Is TXU’s Ultimate Season Pass Worth It?

After running the numbers, TXU’s Ultimate Season Pass is a flop—one of the worst deals we’ve seen. Saving money over a simple plan? Not a chance.

At least with other gimmick plans, small groups of customers can save with the plan. With time-of-use plans, customers can shift their usage to save, or with Bill Credit plans, customers with consistent usage each month can save with the credit, but this seasonal discount offers no edge.

This is the first plan we’ve seen where a customer can’t win. With the TXU’s Ultimate Season Pass, not one customer can save. Even if you used ALL of your electricity in the four months with the 50% discount, you would only break even compared to a simple plan.

The 50% discount months (Jan, Feb, July, Aug) just match a simple plan’s rate—leaving you overpaying $85-$350 monthly the other eight months. That’s not a perk; it’s a trap.

TXU’s pitch sounds slick—$450 in savings!—but the math doesn’t add up. We suspect the complexity’s no accident: flashy discounts hide a raw deal. Don’t fall for it—skip this plan and save real cash with a straightforward option.

About TXU Energy in Texas

TXU Energy is a heavyweight in Texas’s deregulated electricity market, powering homes and businesses since 2002, with roots tracing back to 1882 via Dallas Electric Lighting Company. Now a subsidiary of Vistra Corp after a 2018 acquisition, it’s one of the state’s largest retail providers. TXU offers a mix of plans—fixed-rate, variable-rate, and seasonal discounts like the Ultimate Season Pass 12—plus perks like bill credits and renewable energy add-ons. But our analysis reveals not all plans live up to the hype.

TXU Energy Customer Reviews: What Texans Say

TXU Energy draws mixed reviews from Texans. Some rave about its top-notch customer service and plan variety, like the Ultimate Season Pass 12, while others gripe about high rates, billing confusion, and renewal shocks—traps that hit hard with seasonal or TOU plans. Our take? Check the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) closely before committing, or dodge the drama with a straightforward plan matched to your zip code.

TXU’s Ultimate Season Pass Plan: By the Numbers

Wondering where our numbers come from? We pulled them straight from the plan’s Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for the Oncor service area, current as of April 2025. The EFL is your go-to for any Texas electricity plan’s real costs—we recommend checking it out yourself before signing up for any electricity plan.

For this breakdown, we’re focusing solely on TXU’s charges (not TDU fees, which are the same across providers in Oncor’s zone).
