Why Choose TXU Energy?

Customers choose TXU Energy out of comfort and name recognition. Being that TXU was the only electricity provider prior to the Texas market being deregulated, there are some customers today who are still with TXU from before deregulation.

Note: At Texas Electricity Finder, we do not offer plans from TXU Energy. As one of the largest electricity providers in Texas, TXU is a household name—but with that big name often comes complex plan structures and premium pricing that make it harder for customers to know what they’re really paying for.

Our focus is on connecting customers with transparent, easy-to-understand plans from providers that prioritize value and simplicity over marketing gimmicks.

While TXU is a well-established provider with a long history, their plans are often complicated, loaded with conditions, and among the most expensive on the market. We believe customers deserve straightforward options they can trust—without the confusing fine print.

💡 Note: Almost all of TXU Energy’s plans include a Base Charge. This is a flat monthly fee that is paid regardless of usage, and equates to an additional 1¢ per kWh at 1000 kWh. For comparison, most providers do not include a Base Charge.

Types of TXU Plans

Ultimate Pass Plans: These are Time-of-Use plans that claim seasonal savings by providing discounts on energy charges during peak months. These plans aim to help customers save on high summer usage; however, overall rates may still be higher than those of basic plans from competitors.

Free Nights & Solar Days: These plans are designed to encourage shifts in energy usage while promoting renewable energy in Texas.m Free electricity from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night and credits for 100% solar energy during daytime hours (5 a.m. to 8 p.m.), without requiring home solar panels.

Solar Saver: $30 bill credit each month if you use 1,200 kWh or more. Includes 25% renewable energy content, with the option to upgrade to 100% renewable through TXU’s GreenUp program

Simple Value: You automatically get “Free Days”, “Free Nights”, or “Free Weekends”, whichever has the highest usage. “Free Days,” however, is not the whole day; it’s the middle of the day (10 a.m. to 4:59 p.m.) when usage is the lowest. Very high energy charge during peak hours.

Saver’s Choice: $30 bill credit each month if your energy consumption falls between 1,200 and 2,000 kWh. Any usage outside that range will be charged a premium.

Flex Forward: A month-to-month variable-rate plan, offering flexibility for Texans who prefer no long-term commitment. Typically avoids deposit requirements. And no early termination fee.

Solar Buyback Saver: Tailored for Texas homeowners with solar panels seeking to maximize their investment. Owners with systems producing significant surplus, but the lower buyback rate compared to import costs means it may not fully offset expenses

Is TXU Energy right for you?

TXU Energy may appeal to Texans who prioritize a well-known brand with robust support, but its higher costs and complex plans often make it a poor fit for budget-conscious shoppers. You’ll need to consider whether the trust factor outweighs the potential of higher costs.

Ask yourself—do any of these apply to you?

• Do you value brand recognition and extensive service? TXU’s long history and large customer service team provide reliable support, including a mobile app for usage tracking and a 60-day satisfaction guarantee for new customers.

• Do you have high or non-standard usage patterns that align with gimmick plans? If you can shift energy to off-peak times (e.g., free nights) or qualify for bill credits in plans like Free Nights & Solar Days, you might see some savings—but these often come with higher base rates and hidden catches.

• Are renewable or solar options important to you? TXU offers 100% green plans and solar buyback programs, but the credits are typically lower than import rates, and overall pricing remains premium compared to competitors.

While TXU’s size offers convenience, it’s rarely the most affordable choice—most customers end up paying more due to brand loyalty without realizing better deals exist elsewhere. If simplicity and low costs matter more, explore smaller providers; otherwise, TXU could work for those comfortable with higher bills for perceived reliability.

Review Summary

TXU Energy has built its brand on trust, experience, and customer service. Many Texans stick with TXU for the peace of mind that comes with a well-established provider. Their wide selection of plans, online tools, and around-the-clock support are strong selling points.

However, customers should be mindful of pricing, especially when it comes to contract renewals. Some plans — particularly time-of-use or promotional offers — can be more expensive or complex than they appear.

TXU is often a solid choice for those who value brand recognition, service accessibility, and convenience — but it may not be the cheapest option on the market.

Tip: Always review the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) before enrolling and compare multiple providers to ensure the best fit for your needs.

Our Thoughts on TXU Energy

TXU Energy: A Big Name Provider

TXU Energy is one of the most recognized electricity providers in Texas, with over a century of history and millions of customers across the state. That long-standing reputation creates a strong sense of trust—and for many Texans, TXU is the default provider simply because it’s the name they’ve always known. Their large support team, user-friendly mobile app, and 60-day satisfaction guarantee do offer a level of reliability and customer service that many find reassuring.

The issue? That trust often comes at a high cost.

TXU Plans are Expensive

TXU’s plans are frequently loaded with gimmicks—free nights, bill credits, bundled extras—that sound great in ads but can lead to inflated bills in practice.

Their pricing tends to be on the higher end, and navigating the many plan options can feel confusing, even for savvy shoppers. In our experience, most customers don’t want to dig through marketing fine print or decipher complex Electricity Facts Labels (EFLs)—they just want a simple, fair deal from a provider they think they can trust. TXU knows this, and often uses that trust to steer customers toward more expensive plans that may not actually fit their usage patterns.

In Summary

While TXU does deliver solid service and brand recognition, it rarely offers the best value. Many Texans end up paying significantly more over the course of a year simply because they didn’t shop around.

Our advice: Don’t let a familiar name do your shopping for you. Always compare plan details, read the EFL carefully, and consider providers that offer better rates without the gimmicks.
