Direct Energy Reviews 2026: Plans, Ratings & Who It's Best For

Best pick: If you choose Direct Energy, we’d pick Auto Pay Texas 12: a plain 12-month fixed rate with a $4.95 base charge and no free hours to plan around. On Direct Energy’s own Oncor EFLs, it has a lower average price at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh than every plan in Direct Energy’s online shop. You sign up online, Auto Pay is required (stopping it adds $5 a billing cycle), and the cancellation fee is $150. It’s listed on Power to Choose. Staying less than a year? Auto Pay Texas 8 is the same plan with an 8-month term.

Direct Energy isn’t a TEF partner. Our pick is based on plan terms, not commission.

What you need to know about Direct Energy before you sign

Thinking about Direct Energy? Here’s the short version: who they are, how they rate, every plan they sell right now, and where the fine print bites. We don’t sell Direct Energy plans, so we’ve got no reason to sugarcoat it. Want to see how the market looks? You can compare current Texas electricity rates for your city.

Why Do Texans Choose Direct Energy?

Most people pick Direct Energy for the name and the support. It’s been licensed in Texas since 2001, NRG Energy (which also owns Reliant) has owned it since 2021, and its phone and chat support run 24/7. It’s also known for free-hours plans: free nights, free days or free weekends.

One thing that trips people up: Direct Energy is your provider, not your utility. Your utility (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, TNMP or Lubbock Power & Light) delivers the power and fixes outages, whoever you buy from. Learn how Texas’ deregulated market works.

Direct Energy's Rating

Our overall rating for Direct Energy is 2.7 out of 5 stars.

Direct Energy is a big, stable provider with good support. Its plans are where it loses points.

Provider Quality
Plan Quality
Simplicity
Customer Service
Features
Perks N/A

Why 3 stars? Direct Energy scores well as a stable, long-running provider, and it does fine on customer service and account tools. It loses most of its points on plan quality and simplicity: it sells 20 plans, many of its best-known plans only pay off if you shift a lot of usage into free hours, and several price breaks depend on Auto Pay or on using more than 1,000 kWh. Our scores average 2.7, which we round to 3 stars. Perks are scored N/A and left out of the average.

What the state says: On the PUCT’s complaint scorecard for April 1 to September 30, 2026, Direct Energy scored 4 out of 5, a lower-than-average complaint rate for its size. Check its license on the PUCT provider report.

Pros

• 24/7 phone and chat support
• Simple fixed-rate plans with a $4.95 base charge

• Solar buyback and 100% renewable options

Cons

• Too many plans, with lots of fine print
• Free-hours plans rarely pay off for typical homes
• Price breaks often depend on Auto Pay
• Cancellation fees up to $395 on 36-month plans
• Most plans are 22% renewable, below the 37% statewide average

Direct Energy’s Most Popular Plans

These are the plans Direct Energy pushes hardest on its own site. Their pitch, then our take.

Free Days

Direct Energy says: free electricity every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s the “Most Popular” plan in Direct Energy’s online shop.
Our take: it only pays off if a big share of your usage lands on weekday and weekend daytimes, like a work-from-home household. You pay a $9.95 base charge and a higher rate the other 16 hours, and you need a smart meter. The EFL’s average prices assume a set share of your use is free, so compare that with your own smart-meter data.

Free Nights

Direct Energy says: 12 hours of free power, from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., every night (Twelve Hour Power).
Our take: the free hours are real, but the EFL’s prices assume 45% of your use is free, and most homes use far less at night. We ran the numbers in our Direct Energy Free Nights deep dive.

Live Brighter Auto Pay

Direct Energy says: a fixed rate with an Auto Pay discount for the length of your contract.
Our take: a solid, simple plan with a $4.95 base charge. The discount only applies while you’re on Auto Pay. On Direct Energy’s Oncor EFLs, the 8- and 24-month versions came in lower than the 12-month version, so compare terms before you pick.

Types of Plans

Simple fixed rate (Auto Pay Texas, Live Brighter Auto Pay): one energy rate for the whole term. Auto Pay Texas requires Auto Pay. Live Brighter gives a discount while you’re on it.

Usage-tier plans (Power More Savings, Direct Apartment): Power More Savings lowers the energy rate above 1,000 kWh a month, so it suits bigger homes. Direct Apartment does the opposite: its lower rate covers your first 1,000 kWh, so it suits apartments.

Free-hours plans (Free Days, Twelve Hour Power, Free Power Weekends): no energy charge in set hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., or 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday), and a higher rate the rest of the time. They need a smart meter.

Flat monthly charge (Power Balance 12): one monthly energy charge for up to 2,000 kWh, plus a per-kWh charge above that. It only makes sense if you use close to 2,000 kWh every month.

Green and solar (Green Texas 36 Auto Pay, Direct Solar Unlimited 12): both are 100% renewable. Direct Solar Unlimited gives bill credits for the extra power your panels send to the grid, and it carries a higher base charge.

No contract (Bright Choice): a variable rate that can change month to month, with no cancellation fee.

Note: Texas Electricity Finder doesn’t offer Direct Energy plans, and Direct Energy isn’t a TEF partner. Direct Energy is a reputable, long-running provider, but its lineup is crowded, and you can often find simpler options.

💡 Heads up: base charges vary by plan. Most Direct Energy plans charge $4.95 a month, but the free-days and free-nights plans charge $9.95 and Direct Solar Unlimited charges $29.95. You pay the base charge however little you use.

Is Direct Energy right for you?

Direct Energy can be a good fit if you:

• Want a big, stable name with 24/7 support.
• Are happy on Auto Pay. Its simplest, lowest-priced plans depend on it.
• Use a lot of power in one predictable window, like daytime for a work-from-home household or overnight for a night-shift worker, and can prove it with your smart-meter data.
• Have solar panels and want credit for everything you send back to the grid.

Look elsewhere if you want the simplest choice without Auto Pay, if you want 100% renewable power without a 36-month contract, or if you’re likely to cancel early.

Direct Energy Reviews

Direct Energy reviews are mixed, as you’d expect from a big provider. Customers like the support, the app and locking in a rate. They don’t like renewal rates or surprises on free-hours plans. The state’s complaint data is better than average: 4 out of 5 on the PUCT’s October 2026 scorecard.

Most Common Reviews for Direct Energy

Common Positive Reviews

Helpful support: many reviewers say agents are friendly and quick, and phone and chat run 24/7.
Rate locks: long-time customers like locking in a fixed rate.
Account tools: customers like paying bills, renewing and tracking usage in the app.

Common Negative Reviews

Renewal rates: some customers report big jumps at renewal. Watch for your expiration notice and shop before it ends.
Free-hours surprises: bills higher than expected when less usage fell in the free hours.
Cancellation fees: $75 to $395 on term plans, depending on the term.
Hold times: some customers report long waits at busy times.

Review Summary

Direct Energy is a stable, long-running provider with round-the-clock support, and the state’s complaint data puts it on the better side of average. Most complaints trace back to plans that need careful use or to renewals nobody watched. Pick a simple fixed rate, read the Electricity Facts Label and set a reminder before your contract ends.

About Direct Energy

Direct Energy is the retail name of Direct Energy, LP, based in Houston. The PUCT has licensed it to sell electricity since December 4, 2001, under PUCT #10040. It also does business as Direct Energy Business Services, Direct Energy Multi-Family and New Leaf Energy. NRG Energy bought Direct Energy in January 2021, so it’s a sister brand of Reliant. Besides electricity plans, it sells add-ons like Green Made Easy and home services through partners like Vivint.

Our Thoughts on Direct Energy

A Big, Stable Name

Direct Energy’s size, NRG backing, 24/7 support and 90-day plan-switch guarantee count for something, and its complaint record is better than average.

Too Many Plans, Too Much Fine Print

Twenty plans, three kinds of free hours, usage tiers and Auto Pay conditions make it easy to pick the wrong one. Always check the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) at your own usage.

In Summary

If you go with Direct Energy, pick a plain fixed rate like Auto Pay Texas 12 and skip the free-hours plans unless your smart-meter data says they fit.

Direct Energy FAQs

Is Direct Energy a good company?
It’s legit and well established. The PUCT has licensed it since 2001 (certificate #10040), NRG Energy has owned it since 2021, and it scored 4 out of 5 on the PUCT’s October 2026 complaint scorecard. Where it falls short is plan simplicity.

Is Direct Energy the same as Reliant?
No. They’re separate providers with separate licenses and plans, but both are owned by NRG Energy.

How many plans does Direct Energy have?
We count 20 current home plans: 14 in its online shop and 6 more listed on Power to Choose or on current EFLs. Not every plan is offered at every address.

What is Direct Energy’s 90-day guarantee?
If you’re on a qualifying plan, you can switch once to another qualifying Direct Energy plan within 90 days without an early termination fee. It’s a plan switch, not a free cancellation.

Does Direct Energy charge a cancellation fee?
Yes, on term plans: from $75 on 8-month plans to $395 on 36-month plans, and Direct Apartment 12 charges $10 for each month left. It doesn’t apply if you move and give a forwarding address. Bright Choice has no cancellation fee.

Does Direct Energy buy back solar power?
Yes, on Direct Solar Unlimited 12. It gives bill credits for the extra power your panels send to the grid. Your system must be under 50 kW and have an interconnection agreement with your utility.

How do I contact Direct Energy?
For new service, call 1-855-461-1926. Existing Texas customers can call 1-888-305-3828 or chat 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or email ga-deonlinehelptx@directenergy.com.
